The United States has announced that it plans to impose a new 25% tax on products entering the country from South Korea and Japan, following the sending of letters to leaders of countries by President Donald Trump, in which he describes his latest tariff policies.

These messages came just as the 90-day pause that the White House imposed on some of its most aggressive tariffs was expiring.

Trump had suspended the increase in tariffs, and White House officials stated that they would seek trade agreements, after his initial announcement provoked protests and turmoil in financial markets.

The higher tariffs were scheduled to resume on July 9, but Trump has said that he now plans to implement them on August 1.
