Trump announces a 25% tariff on Japan

On July 8, U.S. President Trump stated in a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba that starting August 1, 2025, the U.S. will impose a uniform 25% tariff on all goods imported from Japan (excluding industry-specific tariffs). Any goods that evade high tariffs through transshipment will be subject to a higher tax rate. It should be noted that the 25% tax rate is far lower than the level required to eliminate the trade deficit between the two countries. If your country or Japanese companies choose to establish production facilities in the U.S., related products will enjoy zero tariffs. We will do our utmost to ensure that the approval process is efficient and professional, typically completed in a matter of weeks. If Japan unilaterally imposes tariffs, regardless of the extent, the U.S. will impose an equivalent tax rate on top of the existing 25%
