25% tariffs on Japan & South Korea, effective August 1, 2025. Trump notified both nations via letters shared on social media, citing “longstanding trade imbalances” .
A baseline 10% tariff (the so‑called “Liberation Day tariffs”) is already in effect on most imports since April 5, 2025, introduced under emergency powers (IEEPA) .
Trump has also threatened an additional 10% levy on countries aligned with the BRICS bloc, and hinted it could go up to 70%, beyond the initial upper bound of ~50% .
