The tariffs on imports during Donald Trump's second presidency, referred to by the media as a tariff war, have reflected an intensification of policies
Trump threatens an additional 10% tariff on nations aligned with BRICS
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, warned that countries that align with the policies of the BRICS alliance that go against American interests will be subjected to an additional 10% tariff.
"Any country that aligns with the anti-American policies of BRICS will pay an additional 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump wrote on social media.
Trump has long criticized BRICS, an organization whose members include China, Russia, and India.
The United States had set July 9 as the deadline for countries to reach a trade agreement, but U.S. authorities now state that the tariffs will take effect on August 1. Trump stated that he would send letters to countries informing them of the tariff rate if an agreement is not reached.
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expected "a couple of very busy days".
"A lot of people have changed their minds about the negotiations. So last night I received a bunch of new offers and proposals," he told CNBC.
So far, the United States has only reached trade agreements with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, in addition to a partial agreement with China.
Although Britain and the United States have yet to reach an agreement on the tariffs on British steel imported by the United States.
Since taking office this year, Trump has announced a series of tariffs on imports of goods from other countries, arguing that they will boost American manufacturing and protect jobs.
