The United States has delivered the first five Harpoon coastal defense missile systems to Taiwan, marking a major step in strengthening Taiwan’s defense against potential threats from China. This delivery is part of a $2.37 billion arms deal signed in 2020, which includes 100 mobile coastal launchers and 400 Harpoon Block II missiles, expected to be fully delivered by 2028. The newly arrived systems include mobile launchers and a radar truck, designed to quickly move and deploy along Taiwan’s coastline.
These Harpoon missiles are powerful sea-target weapons, capable of striking ships up to 124 km away. With GPS-guided navigation and sea-skimming flight, they’re hard to detect and ideal for defending against blockades or amphibious invasions. Taiwan is adopting such high-precision and mobile systems to boost its "asymmetric" defense strategy—focusing on smarter, more flexible weapons instead of matching China’s military size. This move comes amid rising military tension in the Taiwan Strait, with China’s increased naval and air activity around the island.
The U.S. continues to support Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act, which ensures the island can maintain strong self-defense. With this new missile system, Taiwan gains a major boost in its coastal defense, showing it’s prepared to face any rising threat in the region.
