U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Elon Musk in a post on Truth Social yesterday, saying he is “saddened to see Elon Musk completely off track, nearly becoming a political disaster over the past 5 weeks.”

Trump completely rejected the idea of forming a third party, asserting that it “has never succeeded in America” because “the system is not designed for that.” He warned that third parties only bring “chaos and total disorder,” and America “has had enough chaos from the Democrats.”

Earlier, Elon Musk announced the formation of the America Party on Saturday, stating that Americans are craving a new political option. He cited survey data showing that voters want a new party with support twice as high as opposition. Elon criticized both major parties as “corrupt and wasteful,” calling America “a de facto one-party system.”

Trump strongly countered the new party and electric vehicle policies.

Trump is not impressed at all. He praised the Republican Party as “a smoothly operating machine” and boasted that the party just passed the largest law ever in the related field — officially repealing the federal government’s mandatory electric vehicle regulation, one of his long-term campaign goals.

Trump emphasized that this law gives Americans the freedom to choose the type of vehicle they use, from gasoline cars, hybrid cars to future technologies. He also reiterated that the repeal of electric vehicle regulations was something he has promised for many years and in every speech.

Trump revealed that he once asked Elon if he knew that this regulation would be repealed, and Elon is said to have responded that he “didn’t care.” Trump said that response was “extremely surprising,” especially since Elon had previously given him “unconditional and comprehensive support.”

Old conflicts over NASA and personal tensions.

Trump also mentioned a previous request from Elon — to nominate a close friend to lead NASA. According to Trump, this person has capabilities but is “a true Democrat who has never supported the Republicans.” Trump also said that “Elon probably feels the same way.” He argued that appointing someone close to Elon — who operates in the space field — as the head of NASA is inappropriate, as NASA plays a crucial role in Elon’s business ecosystem. Trump emphasized that his priority is to “protect the American people.”

On June 28, Elon wrote on X that “the new Senate bill will destroy millions of jobs and cause serious strategic damage to the United States.” He called it “political suicide” for the Republican Party.

On June 30, Trump responded, stating he would use DOGE — a monitoring program formerly overseen by Elon — to investigate contracts related to the federal government involving Elon’s company.

On July 1, Elon shifted to personal attacks, announcing he would fund the re-election campaign of Congressman Thomas Massie — who voted against Trump’s bill. On the same day, Trump told reporters that he would “consider” the possibility of expelling Elon from the U.S.

Meanwhile, Russian politician Dmitry Novikov told TASS that Russia is ready to grant political asylum to Elon Musk if the situation escalates, but he believes Elon “probably doesn’t need that yet.” Elon has not responded.

Republican voters turn away from Elon, the new party raises concerns for both sides.

A YouGov poll showed that Elon’s net favorability among Republicans dropped by 20 points in just June — the lowest ever recorded. However, Elon received significant attention from independent voters and those not affiliated with the two major parties. A survey from Quantus Insights in early July indicated that nearly 40% of Americans support the idea of Elon’s new party. Although it is unclear how this translates into votes, it has raised concerns for both major parties.

Within MAGA, some Trump supporters expressed satisfaction that Elon is “stepping out” and separating himself. Another survey from YouGov showed that a majority of Republican voters sided with Trump in this battle, while Democratic voters mainly did not choose sides. When asked about Elon’s statements opposing the GOP-backed bill, 56% of respondents agreed with Elon, while only 17% opposed.

Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon remarked on the War Room program that Elon might be “pulled in by the Democrats.” Democratic Congressman from California Ro Khanna also called on his party to “reach out and collaborate with Elon,” as it could yield long-term political benefits.
