President Donald Trump announced the signing of letters directed to 12 countries with new import tariffs that could reach up to 70%. The letters, according to Trump, will be sent next Monday and contain "take it or leave it" offers. The measures will take effect on August 1st.
Initially, a basic tariff of 10% was announced in April, with surcharges reaching 50%. However, these tariffs were suspended for 90 days, a deadline that ends on July 9th. Now, Trump indicates an even greater increase in percentages, frustrated with the progress of negotiations with countries such as Japan and the European Union.
Trump justified the sending of letters as a more practical and faster approach in light of the obstacles of formal negotiations, which tend to take years to be concluded.
