Denmark is set to broaden its restrictions on religious face coverings. After outlawing the burqa and niqab in public spaces in 2018, the Danish government now aims to extend the ban to schools and universities.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that “democracy takes precedence,” asserting that forms of religious expression seen as conflicting with Danish values should not be part of the education system. She also stated that individuals unwilling to align with Denmark’s cultural norms may need to reconsider their place in the country.
The proposal has ignited global debate. Human rights organizations have condemned it as discriminatory, particularly toward Muslim women. Supporters, however, view it as a necessary step toward integration, gender equality, and the protection of secular public spaces.
