President Donald Trump said his administration will begin notifying trading partners about a new round of broad U.S. tariffs on their exports, with duties set to take effect on August 1.

The move marks a significant escalation in his push for what he calls 'reciprocal' trade and comes just five days ahead of a self-imposed deadline of July 9 for countries to sign agreements with the U.S.

Trump told reporters that '10 or 12' letters will be sent on Friday, with additional notifications expected in the following days. 'By the ninth, they will be fully covered,' he said, referring to the expiration of the 90-day window he provided when he initially announced the tariff plan on April 2. The new tariffs could range from 10% to 70%, surpassing his previous maximum of 50%.

Trump reaffirmed his preference for direct tariff implementation rather than lengthy negotiations, saying: 'It’s much easier. I would prefer to make a simple agreement where you can keep it and control it.'
