Keir Starmer on His Bond with #TRUMP : "Family Values Connect Us" 🌍🤝

Sir Keir Starmer has shared that he "understands what anchors" US President Donald Trump, attributing their connection to shared family values. Despite differing political views, Starmer believes their strong personal relationship was key to securing a crucial US tariff deal for the UK. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

On BBC Radio 4’s Political Thinking, Starmer revealed that Trump reached out after the tragic passing of his younger brother, Nick Starmer, on Boxing Day, offering sympathy and support. "We both care deeply about family, and that created a point of connection," Starmer explained. ❤️

Starmer recalled his first conversation with Trump after the US presidential candidate was shot at a rally in July last year, asking how it impacted his family. Later, Trump reached out again after Starmer’s brother passed, showing solidarity. 🤍

Despite recent backlash over welfare reforms and several U-turns, Starmer denied suggestions that he had focused too much on foreign affairs at the expense of domestic issues. He took full responsibility for the challenges but remained optimistic, stating the government would "come through this stronger" after some reflection. 💬

Starmer emphasized the importance of building relationships with international leaders, saying ties with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron were in the national interest. These connections helped secure a tariff deal that eased anxiety among British factory workers and led to an EU deal that may lower food prices in UK supermarkets. 🍞📉

With Macron's state visit to the UK next week, tackling small boat crossings in the English Channel will be a key topic. The number of people arriving in the UK by small boats has surged, with nearly 20,000 arrivals in the first half of the year, a 48% increase. 🚤🌊
