Coincheck (2018)
The Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck was subjected to a massive hacker attack in 2018. More than 500,000,000 tokens of Nem were stolen, which at the time was equivalent to $530,000,000.
Japan's Financial Services Agency required the exchange to improve its security approach. The scale of the hack influenced the creation of an independent self-regulatory organization made up of the two largest exchanges in Japan.
Coincheck pledged to compensate the victims, and 260,000 users received their funds back.
