NASA has hired SpaceX to safely deorbit the International Space Station by 2030, with $843M allocated to crash it into the Pacific Ocean.
Starting in 2026, they’ll let the ISS gradually descend. Once below 300 km, astronauts evacuate, and SpaceX sends a craft to guide it down. Most of it will burn up, with debris landing near Point Nemo — Earth’s space graveyard.
After 20+ years of global science, the ISS will end with purpose.
