China Watches as Musk Turns Against Trump – A Billion Supporters Cheer Him On
The fight between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has caught the attention of millions in China.
Once, Trump and Musk seemed close, raising questions about how much power rich businessmen have in American politics. Now, their split has become a hot topic on Chinese social media, where many people are taking Musk’s side.
The drama heated up when Musk said he might create his own political group called the “America Party.” He announced this after calling Trump’s new tax and spending plan “insane.” Even though Musk tried to stop the bill, it still passed the US Senate and is expected to increase America’s debt by $3.3 trillion.
Just hours later, the hashtag #MuskWantsToBuildAnAmericaParty started trending on Weibo (China’s version of Twitter). It quickly got more than 37 million views.
People in China were excited by Musk’s bold move.
> “When you’ve had enough, you don’t have to tolerate it anymore.”
Musk is very popular in China. Tesla cars are the only Western electric cars that truly compete with Chinese brands. His biggest factory is in Shanghai, and he has good relations with Chinese leaders. Even Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, is famous in China.
This love for Musk is part of a trend in China—people there admire US tech giants. Biographies of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk have both been bestsellers.
Meanwhile, Trump doesn’t have the same image. Many in China see him as unpredictable. He also started a major trade war with China during his presidency.
Some users joked about how childish the feud looks:
> “These two grown men keep arguing over small things, and the entire world sees it.”
Interestingly, China’s strict censors have allowed this discussion to spread freely. It seems that, to them, the chaos in US politics isn’t necessarily bad news for China.
