According to a new report from the country's central bank, trials of the digital ruble have already recorded 100,000 transactions — a key milestone as authorities prepare for broader implementation.
The pilot, which began nearly two years ago, has gradually expanded to include users in 150 cities, with 2,500 wallets created and support from 15 domestic banks. Most transactions involved transfers and retail payments, while thousands of smart contracts were tested on the platform.
Authorities say the digital ruble will play a central role in both domestic and cross-border trade, especially under current sanctions pressure. With increasing user participation and the creation of real-time infrastructure, including technical support centers and fraud prevention systems, Russia appears set to scale up its deployment.
The central bank is now seeking to integrate CBDC into more everyday services, from payroll processing and e-commerce to government procurement. A broader launch is planned to begin gradually on September 1, 2026. This step follows a direct push from President Vladimir Putin to accelerate timelines.
Officials acknowledge that public trust remains an issue, but they believe that gradual adoption and educational efforts will help ease the transition from traditional currency to its digital counterpart. In a country where citizens already hold billions in private cryptocurrencies, the government hopes that the digital ruble can offer a safer and more regulated alternative.
