My people! Do you remember World? That initiative that was previously called Worldcoin, supported by none other than Sam Altman, the brain behind ChatGPT. Well, that digital identity proposal is a serious thing that has everyone talking: some love it and others hate it! And don’t get me started on the regulators, who are on edge in several countries.
Well, brace yourselves, because the very same Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder genius of Ethereum, dropped a bomb and went all out against World’s digital identity system, the so-called World ID. 🤯
In a post he published, Buterin said bluntly that creating a digital identity for millions of people is dangerous. Why? Because, according to him, it takes a huge bite out of anonymity, which is like the most valuable treasure of the blockchain! 💎 You know that Vitalik is a die-hard advocate for decentralization and for people to have financial freedom without anyone spying on them.
For Vitalik, the World proposal goes against all of that. He made it clear: 'With one identification per person, even if it is wrapped in ZK, we run the risk of approaching a world where all our activity must be, de facto, under a single public identity.' Can you imagine that? 😱
And note that when he says 'ZK,' he refers to zero-knowledge proof technology. That’s like saying you can prove you know a secret without having to reveal it. But even with that technology, Vitalik doesn’t trust it.
Now, the folks at World say that their digital identity system is no danger to privacy. They say it’s based on something they call proof-of-personhood, and that your private data is kept safe and no one has access once you create your ID. Moreover, they assure that with this ID, people will be able to sign their creations (art, music, books, etc.) to prove that they weren’t made by an AI bot. 🤖✍️ And to prevent AI from mimicking those signatures, they use your biometric data to create the ID!
Of course, this has made many regulators and privacy advocates uneasy. But World insists that those fears are unfounded and that if one understands how the technology works, they will see that privacy is more than protected.
But that explanation doesn’t convince Buterin even a little. He says that although at first glance the technology seems cool because it protects services without compromising privacy, the mere fact that these IDs are one per person is the beginning of a huge problem for anonymity! 😨
So, stay alert, friends! The conversation about privacy and the future of our digital identities is just beginning. Don’t lose track of this thing!$BTC $USD1 $SOL
