FHFA tells federal mortgage companies to explore crypto

The US FHFA has advised Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to examine crypto for mortgage services.

FHFA Director William Pulte announced the instruction on Wednesday in an X post, saying it supports President Donald Trump's ambition to make America the "crypto capital of the world." This is a major step toward government agencies using digital assets.

"US Federal Housing FHFA, as conservator, hereby directs each Enterprise to prepare a proposal for consideration of cryptocurrency as an asset for reserves in their respective single-family mortgage loan risk assessments, without conversion of said cryptocurrency to U.S. dollars," Pulte said in the order.

Federally supported Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buy mortgages from lenders, bundle them into securities, and pay investors regularly.

Instead of specifying cryptocurrencies, the court proposed digital assets "that can be evidenced and stored on a US-regulated centralized exchange subject to all applicable laws."

Given its rising popularity in conventional financial institutions, some industry analysts predicted Bitcoin will be the principal asset considered.

Strategy CEO Michael Saylor said Bitcoin has been "recognized as a reserve asset by the US housing system."

"A very historic day. “The US mortgage market leads—and the global financial system will follow," Saylor wrote on X Wednesday.

Saylor also told Director Pulte he will provide Strategy's BTC Credit Model. Pulte said he would analyze the model and contact him.
