In the first quarter, the U.S. current account deficit reached a record $450 billion.

In Q1 2025, the U.S. current account deficit rose by 44% to $450.2 billion — the highest on record.

This represents 6% of GDP, the highest level since 2006. On an annual basis, the gap has reached $1.8 trillion.

The trade imbalance has hit historic levels as businesses rushed to import goods ahead of new tariffs.
