šŖšø Spain Rejects NATOās 5% Defense Spending Push
Prime Minister Pedro SĆ”nchez has firmly declined NATOās new 5% GDP defense spending goal by 2035, calling it āexcessiveā and a threat to Spainās social stability.
š¹ Despite pressure from NATO and former U.S. President Donald Trump, SĆ”nchez argued that Spainās 2.1% target is sufficient and warned further increases could harm pensions and public services.
š¹ In 2023, Spain spent just 1.28%āthe lowest in NATOābut aims to reach the original 2% goal by end-2024.
Thanks to diplomatic talks, NATOās final pledge language was softened, allowing Spain to opt out without violating the agreement.
