#PowellRemarks 1. Inflation Cooling, but Not Yet Conquered Powell acknowledged that inflation has eased notably from its 2022 and 2023 peaks, crediting tighter monetary policy and improved supply chains. However, he emphasized that inflation remains "above our longer-run goal of 2%" and said it is "too soon to declare victory." > “We are seeing progress, but the job is not yet done,” Powell stated, underlining the Fed's commitment to bringing inflation fully under control. 2. Rate Cuts Remain Conditional Despite speculation in financial markets, Powell made it clear that interest rate cuts will be contingent on continued data improvement. While some Fed officials have hinted at possible rate reductions later in 2025, Powell struck a cautious tone. > “We are prepared to maintain current rates as long as necessary. If inflation resumes its decline, we may adjust policy accordingly — but not prematurely.” Markets had priced in multiple rate cuts this year, but Powell's remarks led to a repricing of expectations, with traders now anticipating fewer cuts than before. 3. Labor Market Resilience Powell praised the strength of the U.S. labor market, noting steady job gains and low unemployment. He said the current economic environment — with solid growth and slowing inflation — suggests the U.S. economy may be heading for a “soft landing.” > “The labor market remains strong, providing support for consumers and economic resilience,” he noted. 4. Recession Risks Still Linger Though Powell avoided any outright recession forecast, he acknowledged persistent global uncertainties and the potential for unexpected shocks — particularly from geopolitical tensions, energy markets, or credit stress. > “We must remain alert to risks that could derail our progress, and flexible in our policy response,” he cautioned.
