1. Current Status (June 2025):

The U.S. national debt has now surpassed $35.8 trillion.

It continues to rise due to post-COVID economic measures, foreign aid, and social spending programs.

2. What is National Debt?

It is the total amount of money the U.S. government owes:

To internal sources (like the Social Security Trust Fund), and

External sources (like China, Japan, and private investors).

3. Why is the debt increasing?

Budget Deficit: Every year, the government spends more than it earns in revenue (mainly taxes).

Interest Payments: As debt grows, interest payments increase.

Social Programs: High spending on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, etc.
