As of today, the national debt of the USA is over $36 trillion. This includes both intra-governmental debt and public debt, which is the debt owed to private individuals, corporations, the Federal Reserve, and foreign governments. In 2024, it constituted 98% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the USA, which is significantly higher than 32% in 2001. The increase in debt is associated, in particular, with the budget deficit, which has recently been covered by borrowing. The largest foreign creditors of the USA are Japan and China. The constantly increasing debt is a major problem, so President Trump has tasked the creation of a commission that should explore ways to reduce the budget deficit and optimize it.
