Texas Sheriff Cut Bitcoin ATM with a Grinder
The sheriff of Texas County took a corner grinder and cut the Bitcoin ATM to return $25,000 stolen by scammers to the family. Photos of this operation spread on social media, sparking a heated discussion among cryptocurrency users.
The incident occurred in Jasper County. Scammers contacted a local family by phone, posing as government officials. They convinced the victims that the family had to pay a $25,000 fine and immediately transfer the money to a Bitcoin address via the nearest cryptocurrency ATM.
Sheriff Chuck Haward obtained a search warrant and personally broke into the Bitcoin Depot ATM. As a result of the operation, approximately $32,000 was seized, including the $25,000 lost by the deceived family.
"When thieves, scammers, and con artists try to deceive the residents of Jasper County, we act swiftly and use all available resources to protect our citizens and their property at all costs," Haward said, defending his methods.
