#XSuperApp Norway plans to implement a temporary ban on new data centers that mine cryptocurrencies using energy-intensive technology, the government announced on Friday.
"The Labour Party government has a clear intention to limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible," said Minister of Digitalization and Public Administration Kaja Tonng in a statement.
The Scandinavian country aims to preserve electricity for other industries through this measure.
According to Tonng, "Cryptocurrency mining consumes a lot of energy and generates little job and income opportunities for the local community."
The Norwegian government indicated that this temporary ban could take effect in the fall of 2025.
The restriction will specifically target the establishment of new data centers that use the most electricity-consuming technology in cryptocurrency mining.
