U.S. intelligence officials: If the Fordow nuclear facility is attacked or Khamenei is assassinated, Iran may turn to nuclear weapon development
According to reports from the New York Times, despite Iran having stockpiled a large amount of enriched uranium that could be used to make nuclear bombs, U.S. intelligence officials stated that intelligence agencies still believe Iran has not made a final decision on whether to develop nuclear weapons. This assessment has not changed since the last intelligence review of Iran's intentions in March of this year, even though Israel has launched attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. U.S. senior intelligence officials said that if the U.S. military attacks Iran's Fordow enrichment facility or if Israel kills Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, Iranian leaders might turn to nuclear weapon development. However, for many hawkish figures in the U.S. and Israel regarding Iranian issues, it does not matter whether Iran has decided to build a nuclear bomb; they believe Tehran's nuclear capabilities are already sufficient to pose an existential threat to Israel. This issue has long been the focal point of debates over Iranian policy, and the debate has reignited as Trump considers whether to bomb the Fordow nuclear facility.
