Crypto Warfare Unleashed: $90M Torched in Iran’s Largest Exchange Hack
In a dramatic escalation of cyber-warfare rooted in Middle East tensions, Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex was struck by a devastating cyberattack on Tuesday, with hackers wiping out over $90 million in digital assets.
The attack, confirmed by blockchain forensics firm Elliptic, has been claimed by the hacktivist group Predatory Sparrow (Gonjeshke Darande), known for targeting entities linked to the Iranian regime.
But rather than cashing out the stolen Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and over 100 other tokens, the group made a stunning move—they burned the entire trove. According to Elliptic, the assets were deliberately sent to unusable wallets, effectively destroying them in a symbolic act of digital protest.
A Statement in Code
Adding a layer of spectacle, the crypto was sent to blockchain addresses laced with anti-IRGC messages, including the phrase "FiRGCTerrorists"*, a reference to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Generating such specific addresses would require astronomical computing power,” said Arda Akartuna, lead threat analyst at Elliptic. “This wasn’t about profit it was a calculated act of cyber messaging.”
Tensions Fuel Digital Chaos
The breach comes amid a flare-up in hostilities between Iran and Israel, underscoring how geopolitical rifts are increasingly spilling into the digital and financial domains.
This attack isn’t just a breach—it’s a message: Crypto is now a battleground for ideological warfare.
