The Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex, which is the largest in the country, reported a large-scale cyberattack. According to the company, unauthorized access led to the theft of significant amounts from its wallet. This also caused temporary unavailability of the website and mobile application.
Details of the cyber incident
The Nobitex exchange serves over 10 million customers. As the analytical firm Elliptic writes, due to numerous transactions, hackers seized assets of the company worth at least 90 million dollars. The stolen funds were 'burned' by sending them to inaccessible wallets, effectively removing them from circulation – the hackers did not keep them for themselves, it is reported.
Hackers also promise that within 24 hours of the attack, they will publish the source code and internal information of Nobitex from their internal network. Any assets remaining after the intervention 'will be at risk' of new attacks.
The responsibility for the cyberattack was taken by the pro-Israel hacker group Predatory Sparrow, also known as Gonjeshke Darande. On June 17, it became known that they also hacked the Iranian bank Sepah, destroying important data of the financial institution.
