Federal Open Market Committee, an agency of the Federal Reserve (Fed), the central bank of the United States. It is responsible for setting the country's monetary policy, primarily through the determination of the basic interest rate. Its role is similar to that of the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) in Brazil.
The decisions of the FOMC are crucial because they affect not only the U.S. economy, but also have a significant impact on global financial markets and other central banks. The committee meets eight times a year, every six weeks, to analyze economic and financial conditions, assess price stability and employment, and decide whether interest rates should be raised, lowered, or maintained.
After the meetings, the decision is announced, and the chair of the Federal Reserve, currently Jerome Powell, usually comments on the evolution of interest rates and gives hints about the next steps in monetary policy, which generates great interest among investors and traders.
