The American production company LEBUL has acquired the rights to produce a documentary series titled "The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells." The project, set to be released at the end of 2025, promises to use spectacular special effects to reconstruct the journey of the Welsh computer scientist, from his technological hopes to his legal setbacks. For Howells, this film is an opportunity to share his story with the world. "This is the first time I can really show what we wanted to do at the landfill," he says, adding, "I will not give up."

The BBC reports that Howells claims to have received over 200 proposals from production companies around the world to make the documentary, including BAFTA and Emmy award winners. Reese Van Allen, the President of Non-Scripted Entertainment at LEBUL, said in a statement on the site: "This is not just content. It is a live-action tech thriller with nearly a billion dollars at stake — and LEBUL is proud to bring it to the world." After the film, Howells has already stated that he will continue in his attempt to buy the landfill to try to recover the hard drive.
