G7 SUMMIT 2024 IN CANADA THIS WEEK
– The G7 Summit is taking place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Canada. Leaders from the world's top economies are attending, hoping for new updates on trade agreements between the U.S. and partner countries.
– Non-G7 countries invited include India, Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, and the UAE. Most want to avoid being subjected to U.S. tariffs.
– However, the conference is overshadowed by escalating conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that he has discussed efforts to de-escalate tensions with President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The UK has deployed fighter jets and reinforcements to the Middle East. Prime Minister Starmer affirmed that Iran is a concern but also called for de-escalation.
– Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has canceled the customary joint statement due to concerns that President Trump would not agree. This year's G7 may end up being just a series of bilateral meetings rather than reflecting group consensus.
– President Trump is seen as the “wild card” of the conference. He has made shocking statements such as wanting to make Canada the 51st state of the U.S., or “buy Greenland.” This prompted French President Macron to make a symbolic visit to Greenland before heading to Canada.
– French President Macron and British Prime Minister Starmer are trying to build a coalition to support Ukraine, but President Trump has yet to make any commitments regarding security.
– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also attend and meet with Trump, despite their previous tense encounter at the White House.
