๐Ÿด G7 SUMMIT 2024 IN CANADA THIS WEEK

โ€“ The G7 Summit is taking place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Canada, gathering leaders from the worldโ€™s major economies. Key updates on U.S. trade negotiations with global partners are expected.

โ€“ Non-G7 invitees include India, Ukraine, Brazil, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, and the UAE โ€” many of whom are hoping to avoid new U.S. tariffs.

โ€“ However, the summit is overshadowed by escalating conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he has spoken with President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in efforts to de-escalate the situation. The U.K. has deployed fighter jets and reinforcements to the region. While calling Iran a serious concern, Starmer urged restraint to prevent further escalation.

โ€“ Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has scrapped the traditional joint communique, anticipating President Trumpโ€™s likely refusal to endorse it. As a result, this yearโ€™s G7 may consist mainly of bilateral meetings, with little sign of unified positions.

โ€“ President Trump is widely viewed as the summitโ€™s wildcard. Known for his provocative statements โ€” including joking about making Canada the 51st U.S. state or buying Greenland โ€” he has prompted strong reactions. In a symbolic move, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland before heading to Canada.

โ€“ Macron and Starmer are working to build a united front in support of Ukraine, though Trump has yet to commit to any concrete security assurances.

โ€“ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also attending the summit and is set to meet with Trump โ€” despite their last meeting at the White House being notably tense.
