Nout, who also heads the Dutch central bank, added: "The barriers for individuals have significantly decreased, especially with the introduction of exchange-traded funds linked to cryptocurrencies, and the connections with the traditional financial system continue to expand. The cryptocurrency ecosystem will continue to evolve, and so must our regulatory frameworks."
Nout's term at both the Dutch central bank and the Financial Stability Board is set to end on June 30. While Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey will take over the presidency of the financial regulatory body, the Dutch government has yet to announce his successor.
