Do you smell a familiar scent? The physical version of NFT is crazy
Rihanna, Lisa, and the Thai princess are promoting it, and the videos of foreigners fighting over Labubu on TikTok have become even crazier, surpassing the hype around sneakers. After all, sneaker culture mainly attracts boys, but Labubu appeals to everyone.
About five years ago, a white friend from Australia argued with me that China's influence in the cultural industry would never surpass that of the United States, and was even less than Japan's animation and Korea's hip-hop.
Yesterday, I sent him a viral TikTok video of a foreigner fighting multiple times in line to buy Labubu, asking him if he knew Labubu was from China. This jerk read it and didn't reply -- I feel triumphant, so refreshing!
This non-traditional cultural export of 'Chinese elements' is truly impressive, capable of hitting from the inside out and then back in again. After all, when it comes to FOMO and internal competition, we Chinese have never lost.
However, we should be near the peak of the explosive spread now, right? Having experienced the hype from the monkey phase, I won’t gamble on the tail end of this FOMO again.
Let’s calmly review how this IP was initiated, spread, gradually became frenzied, and the opportunities in between, why it didn’t enter the more important and valuable spaces. This kind of global FOMO effect in human history will only repeat again and again.
Moreover, with the successful case experience and motivation from Labubu, there will definitely be more cases in the future where Chinese people are behind the scenes harvesting globally (just look at the current popular projects in the cryptocurrency world, aren’t they all Chinese?).
I plan to go back to Yiwu and fill my car with high-quality replicas, making those Aussie kids envious 🤣🤣🤣
