President Trump and Chinese leader Xi spoke on Thursday, with tariffs and trade talks set to resume next week.
Trump said that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer will meet with their Chinese counterparts in London on Monday.
"The meeting should go very well," he said.
U.S.-China negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of Trump urging countries to expedite talks. The U.S. sent a letter to partners as a "friendly reminder" that the self-imposed 90-day pause on extensive "reciprocal" tariffs expires in early July.
White House advisers have promised trade deals in the "not too distant future" for several weeks, with the only announced agreement so far being with the United Kingdom. U.S. and Indian officials held trade talks this week and agreed to extend those discussions on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the July 9 deadline.
Also, as of Wednesday, June 4, Trump doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.
