London hosts US-China talks after Trump and Xi's call urging stable economic relations with the UK
High-level delegations from the United States and China are meeting in London on Monday in an attempt to bolster a fragile truce in a trade dispute that has harmed the global economy.
A Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng is scheduled to meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Treasury Secretary Scott Pruitt, and Trade Representative Jameson Greer at a location undisclosed in the city. The talks are expected to last at least one day.
These discussions come following negotiations held in Geneva last month, which allowed for a temporary truce in the trade war. The two countries announced on May 12 that they had agreed to a 90-day suspension of most tariffs imposed on each other, which exceeded 100 percent, in an escalating trade conflict that raised concerns of a recession.
Since then, the United States and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, vital 'rare earth metals' for automotive manufacturing and other industries, and Chinese student visas at U.S. universities.
