Canada, which is reluctant to become the 51st state of the USA, is considering the possibility of joining the EU.
German politician Joachim Streit advocates for Canada to join the EU.
Streit has never been to Canada, The Guardian reports. But that didn't stop him from launching a campaign, independently and without ambitions, which he willingly describes as "ambitious": to bring the North American country into the EU.
"We need to strengthen the European Union," said Streit, elected to the European Parliament last year. "And I believe that Canada, as its Prime Minister says, is the most European country outside of Europe."
Streit has long envisioned Canada as a kind of paradise, home to lush forests and wide, tumultuous rivers. But after Donald Trump returned to power, drawing much of the world into a trade war and turning away from traditional US allies, Streit began to see the northern country in a new light.
What he saw were relationships that were relatively unexplored, which could prove mutually beneficial as the world faces rapidly changing global dynamics. "Canadians have seen their trust in the US eroded, just as ours in Europe has, due to President Trump's actions," the German said. "We need to strengthen the ties that unite us with our friends."
