According to the Wall Street Journal, a senior White House official stated that the president did not understand why the billionaire intensified the attacks even after months of direct collaboration in the government.

The recent decision to withdraw the nomination of Jared Isaacman, a Musk ally, to head NASA would also have increased the friction. Musk reportedly complained to close associates about having invested 'hundreds of millions' to support Trump in the election, and in return saw his nominee being discarded, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The history of collaboration between the two includes Musk's role as an informal advisor to the White House and his leadership in the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).

When leaving the position, he was honored by Trump in the Oval Office, in a ceremony described as warm. But, according to the WSJ, disagreements have been accumulating behind the scenes, especially regarding the administration's trade policy and now the mega fiscal project.
