The American corporation Microsoft announced its final cessation of operations in Russia. The subsidiary 'Microsoft Rus' filed for bankruptcy in the Arbitration Court of Moscow, as reported on the 'Fedresurs' portal. This step culminated the gradual winding down of business that began in the spring of 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Although the company's legal presence was maintained, in 2024-2025 Microsoft closed branches in 13 Russian cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The decision is partially influenced by lawsuits from Russian companies, such as 'Gazprombank', which in January 2025 demanded the collection of 90.9 million rubles for the non-fulfillment of contractual obligations. In Russia, Microsoft's decision was described as predictable; however, it may affect corporate clients who use Windows, Office, and cloud services. Experts predict an increase in the popularity of alternatives such as Linux and local solutions like 'My Office' or 'Astra Linux'.
For users, this may mean a shift to pirated software or difficulties with updates. At the same time, the Russian market remains attractive to IT companies, and Microsoft may return through intermediaries after the situation stabilizes.
