US President Donald Trump has accused China of violating a tariff truce agreed upon earlier this month, a claim to which China has responded with its own accusations of US wrongdoing.
Washington and Beijing agreed to temporarily reduce reciprocal tariffs following talks in Geneva.
But Trump said Friday that China had "totally violated their agreement with us." He didn't elaborate, but U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later said China hadn't been removing non-tariff barriers as agreed in the deal.
Beijing's response on Friday did not directly address the US claims, but urged the US to "cease discriminatory restrictions against China."
Strong statements from both sides have raised concerns that trade tensions could escalate again between the world's two largest economies despite recent negotiations.
Trump said Friday in a Truth Social post that the tariffs his administration had imposed had been "devastating" to China and that he had "made a FAST DEAL" to save them from "what I thought was going to be a very bad situation."
"Everyone was happy! That's the good news! The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!"
He did not expand on his accusation, but Ambassador Greer later told CNBC that China had not yet adequately reversed other trade restrictions it had imposed on the U.S.
Greer said that when China responded to U.S. tariffs with its own, they also implemented countermeasures, such as blacklisting some U.S. companies and restricting exports of rare earth magnets, a critical component in cars, airplanes, and semiconductors.
"They eliminated the tariff like we did, but some of the countermeasures have slowed them down," Ambassador Greer said.
He added that the US had been closely monitoring China to ensure it was complying with the agreement and was "very concerned" about the progress.
