On May 29, 2025, reports indicated that the Spanish Santander Bank, through its digital arm Openbank, has applied for the necessary licenses to provide cryptocurrency services to individual clients, under the new European MiCA regulation. The bank is also considering launching a stablecoin denominated in euros or dollars, either through its own issuance or in partnership with an existing entity.

This move comes as European banks expand into the digital asset space, especially with the MiCA regulation coming into effect, providing a clear legal framework for offering these services.
