Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role in the Trump administration, concluding his tenure as a special government employee leading the Department of Government Efficiency ($DOGE ). His departure aligns with the 130-day limit set for such positions, which began on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025 .
During his time at $DOGE , Musk spearheaded efforts to streamline federal operations, resulting in significant layoffs and agency restructurings. However, the initiative faced criticism for its aggressive cost-cutting measures and the verifiability of reported savings .
Musk's exit follows his public criticism of President Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," a tax-and-spending package projected to increase the federal deficit by over $3.3 trillion. He expressed concerns that the bill undermined DOGE's objectives and contributed to his decision to refocus on his business ventures .
In his farewell message on X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead DOGE and conveyed optimism about the department's future, stating that its mission "will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government" .
As of now, there is no official announcement regarding Musk's successor at $DOGE The department is scheduled to be dissolved on July 4, 2026, as per the executive order establishing it .
