🎯 NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have firmly entered the world of cryptocurrencies thanks to Ethereum and its smart contracts. However, at the beginning of 2023, an unexpected player emerged on the scene — Bitcoin, which began to see its own NFTs called Ordinals. This concept sparked heated debates, enthusiasm, and a new wave of innovation.

📌 What are Ordinals?

Ordinals are a way to embed digital content (images, videos, text, etc.) directly into the Bitcoin blockchain by inscribing data into individual satoshis — the smallest divisible units.

Each satoshi can be uniquely numbered based on the order of its appearance in a block (hence the name — 'ordinal' = ordinal). Thanks to a special protocol, data can be inscribed into these satoshis, turning them into NFTs that are fully stored on the Bitcoin blockchain.

💡 What is the difference from Ethereum NFTs?

Content storage: Ethereum NFTs - external servers or IPFS, Bitcoin Ordinals - fully on-chain.
Smart contracts: Ethereum NFTs - yes, Bitcoin Ordinals - no.
Flexibility: Ethereum NFTs - high, Bitcoin Ordinals - limited.
Storage centralization: Ethereum NFTs - partial, Bitcoin Ordinals - minimal.

The main advantage of Ordinals is the highest resistance to censorship and data loss, as all content lives directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. However, this makes them heavy and expensive to store and transfer.

  • Pioneers and collectors saw a unique opportunity to own 'the first NFT in Bitcoin's history'.

  • Decentralization: Ordinals do not depend on third-party platforms or central servers.

  • Imitation of rarity: some satoshis, such as the first in a block or special numbers, become collectible relics.

🛠 How to create or acquire an Ordinal NFT?

To interact with Ordinals, some technical preparation will be required:

  1. Install Bitcoin Core and synchronize a full node.

  2. Install Ord — a tool for 'inscribing' data into satoshis.

  3. Create an inscription — choose an image or text to inscribe.

  4. Use special wallets that support Ordinals, such as Hiro, Xverse, or UniSat.

⚖️ The controversial side

The Bitcoin community is divided:

  • Supporters see Ordinals as a step toward expanding the ecosystem.

  • Opponents argue that they 'clutter the blockchain', raising fees and distracting from BTC's mission as a payment system.

Nevertheless, at the time of writing, Ordinals continue to grow, and projects like Taproot Wizards, Bitcoin Punks, and OnChain Monkey have already firmly established their places in history.

📈 What’s next?

Ordinals, despite their modest technical beginning, have opened the door to a new era of NFTs, based on the most resilient and proven blockchain network in the world. This is no longer just a trend — it is the beginning of a new chapter in the development of digital culture on the Bitcoin blockchain.
