Lagarde criticizes Trump's "offensive" remarks about the European Union:
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde criticized the "terrible language" used by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the European Union on Monday, in response to his comments that the bloc was formed to exploit the United States.
Lagarde pointed out in statements to German broadcaster "ARD" that Washington encouraged the formation of the European Union, adding that "the claim that it was actually intended to harm the United States is completely contrary to common sense. It contradicts history. And certainly, that is not the goal of this region."
Lagarde's remarks come at a time of rising tensions in trade relations across the Atlantic, amid fears that political rhetoric could affect the stability of the global economy and the financial system shared between Europe and the United States.
