😱 This is Trump's ultimatum to Apple: iPhones with "Made in USA" label or a 25% tariff Donald Trump, President of the United States, threatens a 25% tariff on Apple if it does not manufacture in that country, and sinks its shares on Wall Street
🌐 Donald Trump's trade war returned to the center of the economic stage this Friday, May 23, with a direct threat to Apple, the flagship company of Silicon Valley.
The U.S. president issued an ultimatum through his Truth Social network: if iPhones are not manufactured on U.S. soil, the company will have to face a 25% tariff.
The warning had an immediate effect on the markets: Apple shares fell more than 3% in electronic trading before the opening of Wall Street, and the S&P 500 dropped -1.23%.
🚨 The threat comes despite the fact that Apple had already taken steps to calm the leader. In February, shortly after Trump's return to power, the company announced an investment of $500 billion over the next four years.
Among the plans are the construction of a new plant in Houston and the creation of 20,000 jobs. But apparently, it was not enough. The threat to Apple could be just the tip of the iceberg. Trump announced that the 25% tariff would also apply to other tech brands, such as South Korea's Samsung, if they do not move their factories to the U.S.
"If they are going to sell in the United States, I want them to manufacture here," emphasized the president, assuring that the measures could come into effect by the end of June.
"It's fine to go to India, but they won't sell here without tariffs. That's the way it is," said the leader in statements from the Oval Office. And although some measures have been temporarily suspended in the past, this new trade offensive seems to have a more challenging and permanent tone.
