A survey conducted by Harris shows that U.S. President Donald Trump is facing difficulties in persuading American consumers of the benefits of his trade war. Most American adults (56%) say their household finances would be better off if Trump's tariffs had not been implemented. About 52% of respondents feel that the promised benefits of the tariffs do not offset the economic costs they incur. This assessment comes after Trump's 'Day of Liberation' tariff plan became the largest trade protectionist action in the U.S. since the 1930s, pushing tariffs on imports to the highest levels in nearly a century. Following the introduction of the tariffs, financial markets became volatile, raising new concerns about the possibility of the U.S. entering a recession.
