Humanity could reach singularity in just 6 years, according to new studies by artificial intelligence experts. According to an important metric, general artificial intelligence is much closer than we think. In the world of artificial intelligence, the idea of 'singularity' looms. This elusive concept describes the moment when AI surpasses human control and rapidly transforms society. The complexity of AI singularity (and why it borrows terminology from the physics of black holes) is that it is enormously difficult to predict where it begins and almost impossible to know what lies beyond this technological 'event horizon.' However, some AI researchers are on the lookout for signals indicating that singularity has been reached, measured by the progress of AI approaching human-comparable skills and capabilities. One of those measures, defined by Translated, a translation company based in Rome, is the ability of AI to translate speech with human-level accuracy. Language is one of the toughest challenges for AI, but a computer capable of bridging that gap could theoretically show signs of General Artificial Intelligence (GAI). 'This is because language is the most natural for humans,' said Translated's CEO, Marco Trombetti, at a conference in Orlando, Florida, in December 2022. 'Nevertheless, the data collected by Translated clearly shows that machines are not that far from closing the gap.' The company tracked the performance of its AI from 2014 to 2022 using a metric called 'Editing Time,' or TTE, which measures the time it takes professional human editors to correct AI-generated translations compared to human translations.
