That year, I was a freshman. One day in the cafeteria, I saw a tall girl feeding stray cats. She smiled and invited me to join her group to care for animals. We added each other on WeChat and began meeting daily to feed the cats. She was beautiful, kind, and her presence made me happy.

She often treated me to meals and shared stories. One evening, she told me, “From now on, I’ll be your girlfriend.” I was overjoyed. Our routine continued for over a month, with her sending messages, and us spending time together.

Then one day, she suddenly stopped replying. I searched everywhere and learned she had dropped out of school because her parents wanted her to marry someone else. Later, my friend revealed the truth: she had borrowed money online through risky “naked loans” to pay for her sick father’s medical bills. Her family was struggling, and she felt trapped.

Her father passed away, and debt collectors began harassing her. Worse, her private photos and videos were shared online. She felt overwhelmed. Two days ago, she sent my friend a message saying she was tired and wanted to rest forever. She left a letter for me at the post office.

Reading her letter broke me: she thanked me for the moments we shared and apologized for leaving. She wished me happiness and urged me to live well. Tears streamed down as I sat on the street, feeling the weight of loss and the fragility of life.

Sometimes, the kindness we show others is the brightest light in their darkest moments. I will never forget her.
