It appears that former President Donald Trump is beginning to realize that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have outmaneuvered him — and that realization isn’t sitting well.

Despite Trump’s longstanding confidence in his ability to broker peace, he now seems to grasp that Russia’s intentions in Ukraine are not rooted in negotiation, but in domination. Many experts believe the Kremlin’s strategy is to stall diplomatic efforts while continuing its aggression, all in pursuit of its long-standing imperial ambitions.

Russia's tight control over information, combined with deep-rooted nationalism, has produced a population largely loyal to the regime, accepting state narratives without question. This level of internal control is mirrored by its closest allies, such as North Korea.

Trump had once boldly claimed he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. Yet months into his second term, little progress has been made. Aside from a controversial mineral agreement with Ukraine — one critics say may have done more harm than good — there has been no meaningful shift in the conflict.

This has raised concerns in Europe and Ukraine. Some are questioning whether Trump is unintentionally playing into Putin’s hands. He has backed away from strong sanctions, wavered on NATO commitments, and has distanced himself from his initial promises, placing blame elsewhere.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently suggested that Trump’s missteps stem not from malice, but from a lack of understanding — both of Putin’s nature and of the complex geopolitical landscape. “He believed he could negotiate from a position of strength, but misread Putin entirely,” Pistorius said.

Critics argue Trump began talks from a weak position — publicly casting doubt on Ukraine’s NATO membership and suggesting Ukraine may not recover its occupied territories. His friendly rhetoric toward Putin hasn’t helped either.

Military strategist Marcus Keupp offered a blunt assessment: “Trump sees himself as a master negotiator, but Putin is far more calculated and intellectually strategic.”

Since Trump returned to the political stage, analysts say the situation has worsened. He’s emphasized deals over diplomacy, and optics over substance — viewing the conflict as a platform for personal gain rather than global stability.

While some still believe Trump will pivot, realizing the gravity of the situation, others fear he is more concerned with legacy, influence, and image — even at the cost of peace.

Whether this chapter ends in resolution or further instability may depend on whether Trump can recognize the difference between political theater and geopolitical reality.
