Japanese researchers at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) set a new world record for internet speed, achieving 402 terabits per second (Tbps) using standard optical fiber.

This speed, 1.6 million times faster than the U.S. average broadband, was accomplished with advanced amplification technologies across all transmission bands.

The breakthrough could enhance global connectivity, though commercial deployment faces challenges.
