Fake Uber Robbery Leaves Crypto Investor Devastated
Over $120,000 in Digital Assets Stolen After Drugging Incident in London
A shocking incident in London has highlighted the real-world dangers facing crypto investors. An American tourist fell victim to a sophisticated scam involving a fake Uber, a spiked cigarette, and a stolen digital fortune.
After a night out in Soho on May 9, the 30-year-old Portland native called an Uber. A car pulled up matching the profile, and the driver greeted him by name. Trusting the ride, the victim accepted a cigarette—later suspected to be laced with scopolamine, a powerful sedative known as “Devil’s Breath.”
Under its influence, he became compliant and was manipulated into unlocking his phone and crypto apps. “I vaguely remember going through applications… he got a couple of passkeys,” he recalled.
Driven to a quiet area, the driver suddenly stopped, asked him to get out and open the trunk, then drove off—hitting the man in the process and leaving him scraped and alone by the roadside. His phone was gone.
With the help of a passerby, he returned to his hostel and contacted a friend to access his crypto wallets. The damage was done—$123,000 in crypto assets had vanished, drained into wallets across various exchanges.
A Wake-Up Call for Crypto Security
The funds were quickly dispersed through multiple wallets, making recovery nearly impossible. “They took the majority of my wealth,” he said. Despite his deep experience in crypto, the emotional and financial blow was immense.
London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed an ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made yet.
Key Takeaway
This incident is a stark reminder: personal security is just as important as digital security. Crypto investors, especially while traveling, must remain vigilant.
