Trump's stance on Putin changed
In a private call, Donald Trump told European leaders that Putin is still thinking of winning the Ukraine war – a sharp contrast to his earlier public statements, where he portrayed Putin as a peace-loving leader.
Trump did not take any strong action to end the war, instead avoiding sanctions and focusing on low-level Vatican talks. European leaders, especially new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, pressured Trump to impose sanctions on Russia – but Trump only said: “This is not my war.”
Putin gave a signal for peace talks, but did not come to the meeting himself. Now Vatican talks are going to take place in the middle of June, but till now no serious breakthrough has happened.
Bottom line: Trump privately believes that Putin does not want to stop the war – but publicly and policy-wise he is still shying away from taking concrete steps.
